Leaks are mostly detected by customer complaints. Some utilities have web sites and provide apps which allow customers to inform the water utility. Some companies (e.g. Takadu) have developed software for leak detection based on pressure and flow. Current software applications need many sensors and District Metered Areas (DMA’s) and are quite expensive. Furthermore, leak detection based on acoustic technologies (a.o. Smartball) has been developed. These technologies are used ad hoc and have limited reach. With acoustic technologies it is difficult to reach the distribution network, especially in a city environment.
